Being a Vegan!!

In Life on March 16, 2007 by Namrata

I agree that on first look it seems such an insane topic to blog on but being a vegan(in quotes) I can conclude that it sometimes leads to situations and amazing ones they are.I love reading up about people especially ones in the movie industry and eventually I dont gain anything except an estimate of the number of break ups one has had.Of late I have noticed something interesting though , a special mention is made about the person’s eating habits – to be precise whether the person eats meat or is a vegan.

I never knew that being a vegan was such an achievment maybe because thats what I have been all my life but for some its such a huge deal.People in the West look at vegetarians with such high regard as if they have attained sainthood or something of that proportion.Hilarious , but its good that the perspective is changing. There are a few people who cant live without eating meat for a single day and I think for them it must be a real test staying in IIIT where we all seem to have become animal loving homosapiens not by choice but by circumstances.

Going to restaurants in a group throw up several incidents with respect to the forementioned issue. There are a few who have to eat NV , there are a few who have to eat Veg and then there are others who can have best of both worlds. We had a debate in the first year during the English class on animal rights or something around that topic and I can recollect how one of us had debated saying that if animals are a source of food (which is more or less indulegence/pleasure) then whats wrong in using them for lab experiments. Why such hue and cry over tests on animals when one kills and feeds of them – an act that can be done off with. Why raise objections on people wearing fur coats – when you have had one of such animals for supper.Interesting observations but at the end of it all the fact that so many celebrities are turning herbivorous just goes to show the willingness to sarifice for the sake of showing their love for animals or for losing weight or for publicity or to make up for something cruel done to an animal by you in the past and get off the hook!!

PS: I have officially lost it ! I simply cant find topics to blog on.

-> Have been listening to the song ‘Nothings gonna change my love for you ‘ for the past 48 hours and its one of the very very few love songs that I find convey love.

->Its weekend and come to think of it I still feel the same.Unusual for someone who loves Sats and Suns.

->Saw Blood Diamond today and Leo was phenomenal. If he continues this way he may soon replace Ed Norton and Christian Bale from my list of fav actors.

  1. What a topic……… first of all I was laughing ( joking)….. it’s gud u remember that debate we had in english class………. I am a Vegan myself…… but i don’t have any problem with people having NV food habits…….. but there is one point i wud like to make……… saying that banning animal tests and experiments……. and continuing NV food habits… is in no way an analogy……… see if you say people go for NV food ….then why having problems with pochers killing tigers……. this thing shud be kept in mind………..

  2. Neat post!!!The paradoxical issues you put front are very true and the faster people realise the better

  3. Love songs that convey love-> try kuch is tarah with atif, am in love with that song, and its run like 200 times on my playlist for the past week!

  4. What came first ‘an egg’ or ‘a chick’ that laid the egg?

  5. @deepti – thanks
@karan – just finished listening to the song u mentioned. Its pretty good.
@prateek – couldnt help but notice the chick in quotes :-p

  6. Well… i would say its just a matter of choice. I like non-veg and i will continue eating it. And dont you think vegan is a stricter term..even milk and cheese come in non-vegan items… being vegan is different than not eating non-vegetarian food items..

  7. In continuation with what Pankaj has said, I’d say that mink fur coats and veg-nonveg are two separate issues and should not be compared. Minks are a wild species, which cannot be domisticated and are dwindling in number due to poaching. You can as well compare them to tigers. On the other hand, meat is obtained from animals that are especially ‘farmed’ for this purpose.
I think everybody should go veg as it is good for our ecology. Eating a non-veg only diet puts 10 times more starin on momma earth than a strictly veg diest does. Also, veg foods are healthier, as meat deposits fat into our cells, and caues heart problems. And that’s primarily the reason why veggie food is becoming such a fad with our movie stars.
However, eating veg-only is easier said than done; I myself love non-veg food. Maybe I’ll leave it though when I’m older and more mature. These things come with age only, I guess.

@namrata-I had to write this much; I have much more to say on this issue but I guess I’ll have to suffice myself.
Also, can you tell me how do you pronounce ‘vegan’?

  8. I think animal tests should not be compared to animal-food. Cos animals that are eaten are born to be eaten. Its the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest – the law of the nature. Without them, and without them being eaten one way or the other, the ecology of the planet’s food chain would be disrupted. But testing on them is insane, is like so brutal. And poaching is worse.

An issue in which non-vegetarins show complete selfishness , is when they eat endangered species like whales and sharks. Its a pity that there is only so much awareness in the world. And so little co-existense.

  9. PS- Have you turned non veg.

  10. @trisha and aniket – i agree with you on the entities you mentioned but hey read up the post once again. Those words were part of a debate and said by one of my classmates.I have no personal issues with people having Non veg.

I am a vegetarian for the record!!

  12. Nice post !! i think people have already commented wat i wanted to comment so there is nothin left for me to comment :( … by the way i am a NV :D .

  13. Christian Bale???

    About veggies and eating meat.

While eating meat Ur abusing the animal physically and in return feeding Urself. Bad and gud 1-1.
While experimenting Ur abusing it both physically and mentally(If U consider animals to be mute to emotions then the whole discussion is irrelevant). Ur becoming happy mentally by the results(If favourable). Bad and gud 2-1.

If U wanna think spiritually and the boring way, even plans have life. Crappy line but i seems to work.

Bottom line, respect the food chain ;) .

  14. Now strtd the troubles :P

  15. Read Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy – The Restaurant at the end of the Universe !! ;)
